Do I need Bear Spray in Island Park, Idaho or in Yellowstone National Park?

First, yes we stock and sell bear spray at our general store. Next, people always ask me if they need bear spray in Island Park or if they are on their way to Yellowstone they also ask if bear spray is it something they need to buy. There is no yes or no answer but I’ll give you my personal opinion. You’ll notice a lot of bear proof trash cans in Yellowstone and in Island Park – this isn’t because we like to spend lots of money on fancy steel trash cans it is because we want to both protect ourselves and the bears. I think of a good bear proof trash can as insurance just like bear spray when traveling in bear country. Ultimately, you need to decide for yourself and weigh the costs vs. the amount of risk you are taking. There are a lot of bears in both Island Park and Yellowstone (about 1000 grizzlies in the Yellowstone ecosystem which includes Island Park this is up from a few hundred back in the early 1980s) and if you run into one while out hiking or fishing it is pretty reassuring to have something on your hip that can be used in an emergency to defend yourself. Bear spray is a proven effective deterrent, easy to deploy, and a good last ditch option if a 500 pound grizzly has decided it wants to attack you. I’ve personally used bear spray and it is pretty awesome. It creates a massive cloud that instantly goes out about 30 feet and is extremely debilitating as it instantly goes in your eyes and lungs and hurts like crap. If a grizzly is coming at you and a strong wind is blowing towards you it will lose a lot of effectiveness. However, in most cases you can deploy it and deter a bear just be mindful of the wind. If you are going to be staying/visiting very popular places during the day (i.e. visiting Old Faithful, and staying in parking lots and looking at geysers on the most populated trails), I would say save your money. Grizzlies don’t like people and are going to usually avoid crowds of humans. Same is true with Island Park, if you are basically going to be staying in a cabin and going to restaurants and floating down Big Springs you probably don’t need it. If money is not an issue I’d go ahead and buy it just in case. There are plenty of cases (even this summer of 2024) of where someone got out of their car to walk to their cabin and encountered a Grizzly. That said this is very rare. So who do I suggest always should buy bear spray? Honestly, if you are doing anything in the backcountry (fishing, hiking, backpacking) get a can it lasts several years and is worth it. If you are picking huckleberries definitely carry bear spray as they like to eat them too. Fishing in a known bear area – yes get it. If you spending much time away from crowds in Spring or early Summer or Fall get a can. There are less people at these times and you are more likely to see a bear.

Remember too that Grizzly bears are nocturnal in early spring and summer, but become crepuscular and diurnal in late summer and fall. Crepuscular is a big word that simply means they like the early morning and sunset times – essentially they are most active in times of twilight. Diurnal means they can also be out in the day looking for eating opportunities. Fisherman for instance are also crepuscular in the sense that they tend to be out on rivers and lakes early in the morning and around sunset. So if your activities are going to bring you out to the forests during the grizzlies most active periods this is another good argument to be extra careful.

If you have dogs and hike a lot get a can. Some dogs will bark and annoy a grizzly and then run back to you. I have encountered several grizzlies both while hiking and around my cabin (and many while driving past but I’m in the safety of my car) and the bears usually are going to want to avoid you and go about their business. If a bear is guarding a kill or it’s cubs and you surprise it you will be in a situation where you might need to deploy bear spray very quickly.

In sum, if you are only going to visit the main tourists areas in Island Park and Yellowstone you are probably okay to save your money. If you are lucky enough to not need to worry about money go ahead and buy some as it is cheap insurance. If you are hiking, camping, fishing, foraging, or anything else in area even slightly remote I suggest you get some. Heck, I have about 8 cans of bear spray – next to the door in my cabin in case my dog ever stirs up a bear, in my fishing vest and glove box, and a few I just keep around to take on hikes.
